What Retail Traders Can Check Instead

Retail investors can take several steps to protect themselves from hidden spreads, though none are foolproof. The most effective step is to use limit orders instead of market orders. A limit order specifies the maximum price the buyer is willing to pay. For the teenager, a limit order at $48.10 would have prevented the execution at $144. However, limit orders may not fill if the price moves away, and some brokers charge higher fees for limit orders.

Finally, testing with a single share before committing a larger amount can reveal the broker's execution quality. Buying one share with a market order and then checking the fill price against the NBBO can be an eye-opening experiment. The teenager could have done this and discovered the $96 loss before investing more. But most retail investors do not think to test their broker's integrity.

Beyond individual actions, industry changes could help. For example, some brokers now offer "price improvement" tools that automatically seek better prices across venues. A 2021 pilot program by the SEC showed that a centralized auction system for retail orders reduced spreads by roughly 10–15% for participants. However, such systems are not yet widespread.
